In the common people, the exhaust system is almost always called simply “muffler”. But this is not entirely true, since the muffler is just one of the components of the exhaust system.

The exhaust gas removal system consists of:

  • Yoke ring (connects several exhaust outlets into one);
  • Front pipe (connects the manifold with a catalyst or corrugation);
  • Corrugations (reduces vibration transmitted from the engine)
  • CAT (converts toxic gases into harmless ones);
  • Resonator (reduces the noise level);
  • Middle pipe (connects the resonator to the muffler);
  • Muffler (performs the same function as a resonator, but is constructed somewhat differently and uses a special fiber as a sound-absorbing material).

Let’s consider the operation of the exhaust system in more detail. After the combustion of the fuel mixture, many unburned toxic gases remain, under high pressure they enter the manifold, which connects all the exhaust outlets into one. The collector increases the resistance for the exhaust gases, so very often, in tuning and sports, the standard collector is replaced by so-called “spider”. In fact, this is the same manifold, but smoother bends to reduce resistance to gas flow. After the collector, the gases enter the front pipe, the temperature of which can reach 1000°C. From the intake pipe, the gases pass through the corrugation into the catalyst, the main task of which is to provide unburned harmful compounds and convert toxic gases into harmless ones. In most cars, it also reduces noise levels and gives the exhaust a pleasant sound. After the gases have taken place in the resonator, which reduces the noise level, which often has a strange, bizarre, cunning, recoverable shape, since it must repeat the geometry of the underbody and leave room for other car units) gases enter the muffler, which reduces the noise level, like the resonator, but has a slightly different device.

Reasons for the failure of exhaust systems

Any car enthusiast can tell that the exhaust system of a car is faulty and requires repair, since a faulty exhaust system is accompanied by:

ABS (Anti-Block System)

The first developments of ABS date back to the thirties of the last century, but the serial equipment of machines began only in the mid-seventies.

The idea of ABS work is simple enough. The computer analyzes the signals from the wheel rotation sensors and activates the brakes, simulating the actions of an experienced driver during intermittent braking, preventing the wheels from locking.

Its most useful qualities are shortening the braking distance and maintaining control over the car during emergency braking. The disadvantage is that it is difficult to calculate the stopping distance. The argument, what to say, is weighty. However, it is better to stop in ignorance a few meters before the obstacle, than to bump into it with precisely calculated stopping distance. We agreed that the system will be useful for a beginner, but an experienced driver can “outplay” ABS. But the development of electronics led to the fact that in the battle “experienced driver – anti-lock braking system”, the latter won a convincing victory.

Modern multichannel ABS clearly won even experienced professional. It was even possible to get rid of such an unpleasant thing as vibration of the brake pedal when the system is operating. There have been cases when an accident occurred due to its too abrupt actuation. When the brake pedal began to vibrate, and the car made strange sounds, inexperienced drivers got scared and released the pedal. Therefore, in the most modern brake systems, the driver almost does not feel ABS operation.

ASR (TRC (traction control system), STC, TRACS, ASC+T)

The first logical development of ABS was the ANTI-TRUCKING system. The principle of operation is simple: at the moment of starting the car, sensors (ABS) record the slippage of one of the driving wheels, and the computer brakes it using the brakes. If necessary, the same electronics can reduce engine speed. It means, if you “drown” the pedal to the floor, the computer will not let the drive wheels burn the rubber and grind asphalt or sand, but will accelerate the car as quickly as possible, without slipping.

The traction control system will not interfere with any machine, regardless of the type of drive. ASR for SUVs has become a real treasure. Instead of complex transmissions, they use four-wheel drive with free differentials, and the role of locks is assigned to the electronics. This scheme is not suitable for impassable off-road, but “SUVs” will be just right.

Of course, ASR also has its faults. For example, such a system will interfere with an experienced driver when trying to pull out a stuck car by releasing the gas. Moreover, it can strangle the engine and wheels so that the car will not be able to move at all. The ASR prevents active drivers from skidding, controlling its traction. On the other hand, the traction control system successfully fulfills the function of locking the differential, braking the wheel unloaded in the corner and thus equalizing the wheel speeds, and makes the most efficient use of the engine torque.

EBD (EBV)

Further development of ABS has led to the emergence of electronic brake force distribution on modern cars. These systems always work in pairs, so most often in catalogs, you can see the abbreviation ABS + EBD.

The idea for EBD grew out of the fact that when braking hard on uneven surfaces, the car starts to turn. This is due to the fact that the degree of adhesion of the wheels to the road is different, and the braking force transmitted to the wheels is the same. The EBD system, using ABS sensors, analyzes the position of each wheel during braking and strictly individually doses the braking force on it. This takes into account the vehicle load and its position relative to the roadway.

The benefits of EBD are especially noticeable when braking in a corner. It is EBD that allows you to brake in such a situation without losing control of the car. Without this system, braking will end in drift at best.

ESP (VDC, VSC, DSTC, DSC, ATTS, VSA, Stabilitrac)

ESP today is the highest stage in the evolution of electronic active safety systems, combining the best solutions from the above.

The principle of ESP operation is based on the fact that to combat the drift and skid of the car not only by steering and “gas”, but also by braking one or more wheels. If the car is swept away by the front axle, the system brakes the rear wheel, which is internal to the corner, giving the car oversteer. When there is a danger of skidding, the outer front wheel is braked. When all four wheels are demolished, ESP calculates which one to brake and at what point. Together with braking, the system “dumps” the engine speed. Thus, using the ABS and ASR actuators, the system is able to brake each wheel individually.

But in order to do such a complex job, just ABS sensors are not enough for ESP. Therefore, the vehicle has additional sensors. One tells the system in which direction and at what speed the steering wheel rotates. Other two – are about the angle of car rotation and the level of lateral acceleration. The readings of these sensors allow you to instantly calculate what is happening with the car and activate the actuators.

BSM (Blind Spot Monitor)

There are often many events happening in the blind spot, and if you ignore them, they can cause serious accidents. Unlike the driver, the blind spot monitoring system always sees everything that happens in the blind spot, which improves all-round visibility.

Blind-spot monitoring works by means of radar sensors in the rear bumper of the car. They monitor the situation behind the car in an area of ​​about 20 m and are activated at speeds over 15 km/h.

As soon as the sensors detect another vehicle within range, the driver is alerted to the potential hazard by LED indicator in the corresponding outside rearview mirror.

If the driver has turned on the direction indicator on the appropriate side, the brightness of the LED indicator increases, alerting the driver about increasing danger.

ACS Automatic braking systems (Active City Stop) are called by experts as developments that help the driver to stop the car on the track obstacles. ACS reduces the risk of accidents by reducing the interval between pressing the pedal and stopping by 15%. There are no technical obstacles to stop the car without the driver’s participation. Modern indicators and sensors work quickly and accurately.

How does it work?

The automatic braking system is based on the principle of lidar (laser radar). The device sends pulses every 0.1 s, which scan the space in front of the car, identify obstacles on the way, determine the distance to the object and its speed. Usually the radar is mounted in the front bumper and the camera is mounted on the windshield. The task of the radar is to detect an object at a great distance in front of the car. The camera evaluates the danger posed by the obstacle, and the system decides to start braking or continue driving in the same mode. Today, the development of ACS works effectively at vehicle speeds within 15 … 30 km/h. But you should be vigilant and leave the braking solution entirely to the system.

The Park Assist system is a reliable assistant during parking. Its work is activated by pressing the button corresponding to the name of the “autopilot” on the panel. After starting, the assistant automatically searches for free (suitable area) space on carriageway side, which is indicated by turned on blinker. The search for a place is carried out by built-in on-board sensors (ultrasonic type). They calculate the area of ​​free space and measure it with the dimensions of the vehicle. If the search and calculations show that there is enough space, the car starts to park. The system also finds a safe trajectory to drive in, so as not to damage neighboring cars. What is the driver’s task? Apply the gas and brake in a timely manner.

Bentley Cars Ltd. – is an English company specializing in the production of cars, the founder of the legendary aristocratic car brand, formed in 1919, Walter Owen Bentley.

His first car with a 3-liter “four” was developed jointly with F. Barges and G. Varley. In the autumn of the same year, Walter Bentley showed his first-born at the London Motor Show, but he was able to establish production only after two years. By the way, from the very beginning, Bentley set his sights on the production of prestigious cars. A volume of three liters made the car unattainable for ordinary motorists, and a five-year warranty period, unique for that time, attracted the attention of wealthy people. The car bore a simple name – 3L, which simply meant the presence of a 3-liter engine. Later this designation became traditional. And only somewhere from the mid-twenties, verbal designations began to appear in the names, for example, Big Six.

Bentley, without burdening himself with design delights, paid special attention to the technical side of the issue. He saw the main purpose of his cars in winning car races. Indeed, it has rarely happened that Bentley cars did not win sports. The use of large-volume engines made it possible to remove a considerable amount of horsepower from them. One of these was the 4.5L model with a Roots rotary supercharger placed in front of the radiator. This car was specially designed for the famous racer and industrial magnate G. Birkin. The S3 model appears in 1963. Bentley T appeared in 1965.

Turbocharged models begin production in the 1970s. These are the MulsanneTurbo and Turbo R models bearing the Bentley trademark. According to connoisseurs, the Bentley MulsanneTurbo has become one of the best sedans in the world, even when compared to the Mercedes-Benz 600SEL.

The modern program of the company has been formed for about 20 years. But the most interesting of this “opera” is “SC” modification (Sedanca Coupe) with a retractable rigid roof. The most powerful Continental T with a shortened base and a 6.8-liter Vickers turbo engine develops 426 hp, and is rightfully considered one of the fastest coupes in the world – the maximum speed is 273 km/h with a gross weight of 2850 kg.

The design of the soft leather upper for the Azure convertible was designed and manufactured by the Italian company – Pininfarina. The premiere of the convertible from Bentley took place in late 2000 at the Birmingham Auto Show.

Nevertheless, all these experiments made the car a unique exhibit of history, keeping the imprint of long gone era.

Bentley Motors has been producing Bentley Flying Spur since 2005 (Flain Spur – from the English – “flying spur”) – an executive sedan. It was called Continental Flying Spur until 2013. The name Flying Spur was first used in 1957 for the four-door version of S1 coupe.

Bentley company has long planned a crossover in its lineup. The company presented its first incarnation in March 2012 under the name Bentley EXP 9°F. The future car had a platform in common with the Porsche Cayenne, Q7 and LamborghiniUrus and had a W12 engine. However, after this appearance, news about the car practically stopped for 3.5 years. Six months later, the car was spotted for testing, and it also became known that the car’s premiere is planned only in 2 years – in 2016. Aston Martin is a legendary British company specializing in the production of ultra-expensive sports supercars. It is a division of the Ford Motor Company’S Corporate Group. It is headquartered in Newport Panell.

The founders of the Aston Martin brand are called Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, who in 1914 in London district of Kensington built a light motor sports car with 1.4-liter Coventry-Simples engine on the chassis of the Italian Isotta Fraschini passenger car. Since 1976, one of the world’s most extravagant high-end Aston Martin Lagonda cars with an elongated wedge-shaped hood, under which the already well-known “eight” of 390 hp was hidden, has been produced in small series, along with a Chrysler automatic transmission. This car was not affordable for a common man, but in the Middle East, Lagonda was very popular. For example, one of its owners was the Prince and Princess of Saudi Arabia.

With the coming of the 80s, the financial position of Aston Martin deteriorated further. For 7 years, it was bought out several times by British and American industrial and financial groups, but this did not lead to significant changes in the company’s affairs. Relative stabilization began only in 1987, when the American corporate group Ford Motor Company became the next owner of Aston Martin, which bought 75% of the company’s shares.

In 2000, the American auto giant Ford officially introduced the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish model, which, thanks to a new, more powerful engine and the use of lightweight materials, has an amazing driving performance. Vanquish is like not a car at all, but like some kind of boutique on the Champs Elysees. Needless to say, the car is literally crammed with all possible electronics. All information is processed by the on-board computer (which, according to engineers, can execute up to 2 million commands per second), displayed, and the most important is duplicated by voice. All cars were assembled by hand and by individual order.

In 2001, the company announced the release of the four thousandth Aston Martin DB7 model. This is the Vantage coupe, painted in gray-green colour of Galloway Green. Sales of the DB7 set a new record for the company and exceed the total sales of the previous generations of this model – DB4, DB5 and DB6.

The DB9 was first presented at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. Although it replaced the DB7, Aston Martin did not name the car as the DB8 due to concerns that the name means existence of a V8 engine (DB9 has a V12). It was also reported that Aston Martin believed that the name of “DB8” car would indicate a gradual evolution and distort the idea of ​​the car. Thanks to this model, the company was able to return to racing again after long breaks.

The DB9 is the first model built at Aston Martin’s Gaydon plant in Warwickshire, England. In a 2007 interview, Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez stated that while Aston Martin has traditionally been a more exclusive car manufacturer, he believed Aston Martin needed to be more visible and build more vehicles.

In 2005, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage sports car made its debut. The model range included versions with coupe and roadster bodies. The front-engined car was equipped with a V8 4.3 petrol engine with a capacity of 385-408 hp, and in 2008 the car received a new eight-cylinder engine with a volume of 4.7 liters, developing 426-446 hp.  The gearbox could be mechanical or robotic, it was assigned to the driving rear axle according to the transaxle scheme. In 2009, production of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage began, equipped with a twelve-cylinder engine with a capacity of 517-603 hp. The car was produced in the UK until 2017.

It should be noted, that the elite Aston Martins are still assembled in four small sheds near Newport Pagnell town in central England. This plant never learned what a conveyor or Ford’s division of labor was. At another plant where Aston Martin BD was made, a special brand is put under the hood of each car: the name of the assembler, or, better to say, the author.

Maserati is an Italian company specializing in the production of comfortable sports cars with a spectacular appearance and high dynamic performance indicators. It is part of the largest Italian automobile corporation “FIAT”.

But the birth of Maserati, as a company and brand known to the whole world, took place on April 25, 1926, at the start of the Targa Florio races. At these competitions, the third of the Maserati brothers, Alfieri, presented and piloted the first production car, the Maserati Gran Prix 1500, bearing the trident sign on its hood.

In 1929, racer Bakonin Borzacchini set a new speed record on Tipo V4 at a distance of 10 km – 246 km/h .

From 1932 to 1939, after the death of Alfieri, all cars were created by the younger Maserati – Ernesto. During this period, he designed all the engines and several times led his cars in races to victory. In 1933 Ernesto Maserati was the first in Europe who used hydraulic brake booster in racing cars.

In 1939 and 1940, American Wilbur Shaw in a Maserati 8CTF (under the name of Boyle Specials), winning the Indianapolis 500, helped Masеrati go down in the history of legendary American racing. In 1954, the single Maserati 250F won the Formula 1 race in Argentina. In 1957, equipped with a powerful and reliable 6-cylinder engine, the 250F helped the famous Fangio to win his fifth world title and the last title for Maserati. In the same year, Maserati officially announced its retirement from racing and transferred racing technology to production road cars.

At the same time, in 1957, the company’s best-selling Maserati 3500GT, the first production road model, was presented. It was equipped with a 6-cylinder twincam engine (2 overhead camshafts) with a displacement of 3.5 liters. The body was created by the Milan Touring firm. In 1961, the car was equipped with a Lucas mechanical fuel injection system, which allowed the company to add “GTI” letters to the “3500” name. Thus, the 3500GT became the first Italian car to be equipped with a fuel injection system. Production of the 3500GT was discontinued in 1964, after producing about 2,000 vehicles.

At the turn of the 50s and 60s, the production of the Maserati 5000 GT began, a car that revived the luxurious pre-war tradition of building a car “to order”. Maserati supplied the engine and chassis, and the car bodies were “sewn” by Allemano, Michelotti, Bertone.

In 1963, another project was born on the drawing boards of the Vignale company, designed to replace the outdated by that time Touring design body. The new car, named as Sebring, in honor of Maserati’s North American racing victories, had a well-tuned and reliable engine in a modern and aggressive body. In 1968, the French Citroen bought a controlling interest in Maserati. The most notable result of the partnership between the French and Italians was the Indy model (1104 copies were produced), more than the alliance of two car companies, which lasted until 1975, did not prove itself.

Despite Maserati’s retirement from racing, its engines and cars continued to win races. Powered by a Maserati V-12 engine, the 300 Cooper won 2 consecutive World Championships: Mexico 1966 and South Africa 1967.

In 1968, Maserati got a French partner – Citroen (he can be called as a partner a stretch, since the French bought up a controlling interest in the Italian company with a difficult position). At the same time, the Indy 2 + 2 model premiered and production of the new V6 engine began.

In 1971, the Bora model was born, the first GT car with a mid-engined engine. A new concept for Maserati models began to emerge with this car. From now on, the company begins to make not just super-fast cars. It gives her travel models even more comfort and luxury.

The following year, the Maserati Merak premiered, which the Italians endowed with a V6 engine developed for the Citroen SM. Merak has become a worthy competitor to its classmates Ferrari 308 GT4 and Lamborghini Uracco. In 1976 the Merak SS appeared, equipped with a new modified 3-liter V6 version and a more elegant Bora dashboard.

In 1976, Maserati renews its marketing strategy and decides to enter a new niche. The company enters into a competition with Mercedes and BMW and produces the first in its history executive class car – QuattroporteIII with a body from Giugiaro.

In 1981, De Tomaso changes his strategy. The solution was Biturbo, a two-door sedan equipped with a new 6-cylinder 2-liter 2-turbine engine with 180 hp. All this was packed in a small but luxurious body. A hit in Italy, Biturbo entered the world stage in 1986. The export versions were equipped with a modified 2.5-liter V6.

1989 saw the release of Shamal, the last representative of the De Tomaso era in the fate of Maserati, powered by a new 3200 cm3 Biturbo 8-cylinder engine that gave this monster 325 hp.

The Karif soon came out – a real sports car. Fitting a reliable 2.8 V6 to the Biturbo chassis, they got the fastest car in the Biturbo series. And by removing the roof on the Spyder, Maserati engineers turned it into a real rocket.

From 1993 to 1995, the Italian giant Fiat Auto SpA bought 90% of Maserati’s shares and in 1996, under his care, the premiere of the new QuattroporteI V Evoluzione – the Maserati took place.

In 1995, under Fiat patronage, a series of races were held for the Ghibli Open Cup. The release of the road version known as Ghibli Cup was coincide with this event. In 1997, Maserati merged with Ferrari (in fact, the management of the company passed to Ferrari). Porsche (Dr. Ing. h. c. Ferry Porsche AG) is a German automobile company. The headquarters is located in Stuttgart.

The company was founded by the famous designer Ferdinand Porsche. In 1936, the first versions of the future “people’s car” for all time – the famous “Beetle” “Volkswagen”, which had another name – Type 60.

In 1937, the “Third Reich” needed a racing car to participate and, of course, to win the Berlin-Rome marathon, scheduled for September 1939. That time Porsche project received the support of the National Sports Committee. The work has begun.

Three prototypes Porche “Type-60K-10” were built for this event on the “Zhuk” base, or rather “KdF” (name until 1945), with a 50 hp uprated engines (instead of standard 24 hp). But the war disrupted the publication of this model.

The very first “Porsche-Carrera” was released in 1955. In addition, this modification has received a power plant entirely developed by the experts of “Porsche” company. The same engine was used on the 550 model. After that, laurels fell on the machine’s creators.

The coming 1956 brought two events at once: an updated version of the “356” model – the “356A” model. Something completely new was needed. This car turned out to be another masterpiece of Ferdinand Porsche – the world famous “Porsche-911”. Ferry’s son Ferdinand Alexander took part in the creation of this car. The new car was first shown to the public at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show.

In 1967, the Porsche 911 Targa finally went on sale.

1975 saw the release of the Porsche 924, which was considered the world’s most economical sports car.

In March 1977, “928” model was released (already with the “8-cylinder” of 240 hp), which also managed to become the “Car of 1978” in Europe.

In 1979, a more powerful “928S” model appeared with 300 hp engine. The speed of the car reached 250 km/h, which was 20 km/h higher than the maximum of the “924th” model.

In 1981, a further development of the 924 model was the Porsche 944. 220 h.p. also influenced the speed – 250 km/h.

Three years later, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, a prototype of another masterpiece was presented – “959” model. Collecting everything possible and impossible, she personified the most modern sports car from “Porsche”.

Throughout the decade, the class of prototypes was supplemented by new successful models: “936”, “956” and “962”, which repeatedly collected laurels in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, “959” reigned in the marathon “Paris – Dakar”.

In the late 1980s, 911 Spyder model was introduced. It took three decades before the “Spyder” name was revived. As for the turbo version, it was released in the new decade, or rather, in 1991.

Another gift from Porsche designers was the debut of a new generation of 911 model, Type 993, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in 1993. Two years later, the Porsche appeared with 408 hp. boxer turbo engine. The same year, “928” and “968” models, which did not meet the expectations, completed their journey.

In order to consolidate its post-crisis position in the sports car market and in the class of “inexpensive” cars, Porsche introduced a completely new type of car – the “Boxter” model, in 1996. The 1999’s gift is the GT3 (in the back of the 996), replacing the Spartan RS. The GT3 takes the lead in all road car and club races now. In terms of dynamics, this model comes close to the great “turbo” – 4.8c.

Next year is the triumph of the new turbo based on the 996 model. With a modest 420 hp it reaches “hundreds” in 4.2 s. And it confirms its direct relation to the rank of supercars.

BMW enters the great 90s with a new dream for everyone – the BMW 850i with BMW M70 V12 (M70, M73, S70) and BMW M60 V8 (M60, M62) engines. Repair of AUDI

In 1899, the brilliant German engineer August Horch founded his first automobile plant and laid the foundation for the future corporate group. However, 10 years later, due to disagreements with partners, he had to leave the board of the firm under his own name. Having borrowed a huge amount at that time of 200 thousand models needed for a new enterprise, Horch, whose surname means “listen”, was painfully thinking about the possible name of his new company.

Mercedes-Benz is a German company specializing in the production of passenger cars and engines, founded in 1926. It is currently a subsidiary of Daimler-Benz corporate group headquartered in Stuttgart.

BMW (Bayerisch Motoren Werke AG) is one of the most popular, easily recognized and well-known automotive brands in the world, headquartered in Munich.

During this time, the most prominent engineers who created the name for the Deimler-Benz corporate group were Ferdinand Porsche, Fritz Nallinger and Hans Niebel.

For the first time the CLK model with a coupe body was shown in the winter of 1997 in Detroit. Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR is a unique road version of “Grand Turismo” GTR racing car. Limited edition production (25 pcs.). The first performance is in November 1998.
